The public was once again excited by the solar vehicle race, recently organized by the Cyprus Institute in collaboration with the Municipality of Nicosia, in the heart of the capital. Thirteen prototype cars with collectors that absorbed solar radiation by supplying the engines with energy took part in the race.

The alternative confrontation with only fuel the sun, offered a unique spectacle to dozens of locals and foreigners. The winner was the team of the Regional Technical and Agricultural School of Avgoros with the vehicle Hyperion 3, the second place was won by the team of the Technical School of Agios Lazaros Larnaca with the vehicle Hermes and the team of the Regional Technical and Agricultural School of Avgoros with the vehicle Hyperion 1, while The third place was won by the team Club "RA" Limassol with the vehicle Little Sunny and the team of the Regional Technical and Agricultural School of Avgoros with the vehicle Hyperion.

It is noted that the first prize is won by the Regional Technical and Agricultural School of Avgoros for the consecutive 4 years.

The best design award went to the Quantum Leap vehicle of the Paralimni Technical School team. Honorary awards were also given to the team of the Hellenic School Pascal and Pascal English School with the vehicle Solevo 5, to the team of the Technical School of Agios Lazaros Larnaca with the vehicle Phoebus, to the team SunRacers with the car SunRacer2, to the team of the Technical School of Paralimni with the vehicle Phenomenon, in the Club "RA" Limassol team with the First vehicle, in the Odyssey team with the ClearSkies vehicle and in the American Academy of Nicosia team with the Jasmine vehicle.

The solemn ceremony of awarding the winners took place in the courtyard of the Nicosia City Hall and the awards were presented by the Mayor of Nicosia Konstantinos Giorkatzis and Kyriakos Kokkinos, a member of the Board of Commissioners of the Cyprus Institute. Konstantinos Giorkatzis referred to the big problem of air pollution, emphasizing that thousands of cars move on the streets of Cyprus, emitting harmful pollutants.

He also stated that the Solar Vehicle Race is part of the planned efforts of the Cyprus Institute to promote the activity of young people and scientists of the future, in science, technology, but also the development and utilization of alternative energy sources.
