The specialized Breast Center at the General Hospital of Nicosia is now becoming a reality after years of Europa Donna competitions. The inauguration will take place on November 1, 2016 by the President of the Republic, Nikos Anastasiadis.
This was announced today by the President of Europa Donna, Evi Papadopoulou, at the beginning of the grand march of thousands of women from all over Cyprus, in the presence of the Minister of Health, George Pamporidis, MPs and the Mayor of Nicosia, Konstantinos Giorkatzis.
The march, which started from the parking lot at the end of Makarios Avenue and ended outside the headquarters of Piraeus Bank, which was also the major sponsor, was attended by many men and small children with their families.
The marchers held 604 pink figures which is the number of new cases of women diagnosed with breast cancer, 2 blue which is the number of new cases in men and 71 white which is the number of women who lost the battle last year.
Until last year, the central slogan of the march was the requirement for the creation of a Breast Center, said Ms. Papadopoulou. After achieving this grand goal, he continued, the central motto of this year's course is: "We walk for all the women of our lives."
Breast cancer remains the most common form of cancer in women and the leading cause of death. 20% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are up to 40 years old. New drugs and new tests save 30-40% of women from unnecessary chemotherapy.
Cyprus is very close to reaching 80% of survival, as is the percentage of advanced countries, and this thanks to enlightenment, awareness, early diagnosis, improved medicines, new treatments and specialization in the field of control of breast cancer.
Europa Donna operates two programs: "Science Friends" and "I Support".
The first offers women who have undergone breast cancer surgery the opportunity to have the first prosthesis free of charge, external silicone prosthesis, the special bra and the support of a specialized breast nurse.
The second aims to provide the best possible psychological and emotional support and assistance to women and men with breast cancer experience, as well as to their families.
