DISY Famagusta MP, Kyriakos Hatzigiannis, expresses his strong reaction regarding the proposal of a law for the safety of bathers on the beaches.

In today's letter, Mr. Hatzigiannis refers to the unfounded concerns that have been observed during the debate on the relevant bill in the Parliamentary Committee on Interior.

As he states, during this period there have been many injuries and several deaths of bathers, which if the legislation existed, could have been avoided. He continues, he continues in his letter, but there is no discount on the safety of bathers, because the income from the use of the beaches is used for other purposes.

Mr. Hatzigiannis also claims that the safety of bathers on Cypriot beaches is a tourism strategy and suggests that the police provide a full analysis of drowning and injuries during this period to further investigate and avoid future incidents.

This announcement:

"The draft law on the safety of bathers on Cypriot beaches was discussed in the Interior Committee of the Parliament. It is with regret that I have noticed that unfounded concerns are being expressed during the discussion of the issue, with the risk of burying the initiative for its resolution.

The safety of bathers must be ensured. There have been many injuries and several deaths of bathers during this period, which if the legislation existed, could have been avoided. However, the safety of bathers can not be discounted, because the income from the use of the beaches is used for other purposes.

The safety chapter of bathers on Cypriot beaches is also a tourism strategy. The police must give a full analysis of the incidents of drowning and injuries during this period in order to further investigate and avoid future incidents.

I would like to thank the Chair of the Committee on Home Affairs, who insists on the need for legislation on this issue.

I have stated that as the rapporteur of the bill I express my readiness to adopt any suggestions for the improvement of its provisions that will help the future implementation of the legislation. My readiness reinforces the need to complete the debate by article, so that the bill can be forwarded to the Plenary for a vote. "
