Tensions, extraditions and arrests during the parades

Today's anniversary of March 25 throughout Greece was characterized by cancellations of parades, extraditions, arrests, tension and minor incidents in many cities. In total, police made 299 arrests across the country and 40 arrests. 

Thessaloniki, Greece

The parade started in Thessaloniki, 10 minutes late. Workers, teachers, members of SYRIZA and organizations of the extra-parliamentary left, gathered at the parade site, on the coastal boulevard of Alexander the Great, shouting slogans against the government and the memorandum.

Police raided four people handing out leaflets at the parade site. During the parade, part of the students did not turn their heads to the officials. At 11.30, the police proceeded to bring in 15 people, who moved to the official platform.

The government was represented by the Deputy Minister of Health, Dimitris Vartzopoulos, while the mayor of the city, Giannis Boutaris, the MP Stavros Kalafatis (SW), the independent MP Costas Gioulekas, the on-duty regional governor Panagiotis Arozimos, Metropolitan Anthimos, with representatives of the military and other city authorities.

Patras

Incidents occurred before the start of the parade in Patras, when at the time of the doxology a group of about 200 people headed to the parade site, broke the police cordon and then attacked the police forces with eggs and coffee. Police arrested about 30 people.

Earlier, Agios Nikolaos was turned into a battlefield, with the police throwing chemicals against the members of the popular assemblies of Patras who tried to approach the official platform. Some protesters threw bottles with water against the police. Police have repelled the protesters at the intersection of St. Nicholas and Rigas. Protesters shout slogans and remain on the spot.

Crete

In Heraklion, Crete, the parade did not start as citizens protesting against the austerity policy threw eggs, coffee and yogurt at the officials, as a result of which the police forces used chemicals to repel them.

The Archbishop of Crete, Irineos, appealed to everyone, emphasizing that "we are all brothers" and asked everyone to respect today and the parade.

Piraeus

There was tension during the student parade in Piraeus as, in front of the official platform and behind the railings, members of ANTARSYA raised banners and shouted slogans against the officials.

Larisa

At the end of the parade of the student sections in Larissa, there were incidents and clashes between police and citizens, resulting in minor injuries and two arrests by the police.

Tower

A demonstration took place after the end of the March 25 parade in Pyrgos, which started from the beginning of Manolopoulou and ended in the central square. Protesters are currently displaying banners at the town hall.

Lamia

The parade in Lamia was also barricaded and policed. Draconian was the security measures in the capital of Fthiot to avoid "unpleasant" events during the parade.

Shortly before the parade began, while the "officials" were heading to the podium, those gathered in Eleftherias Square of the municipal movement Citizens' Intervention shouted at the metropolitan to give the church money to the people. (Read about it here)

Veria

32 people were brought to Veria before the start of the parade, for precautionary reasons. The suspects were in possession of bats and other objects and according to the police they intended to approach the official platform.

Nafplio

The disapproval of the gathered citizens throughout the parade in Nafplio did not stop for a minute. The Deputy Minister of Energy and Climate Change, G. Maniatis, was present on behalf of the government and did not hide his dissatisfaction with the disapproval.

The shouts and applause started with the laying of wreaths and then continued during the parade of the student sections. Most of the students (did not turn their heads to the right) while many of them turned their heads to the left, showing their aversion to government policy.

Drama

Unexpectedly, on Sunday, the traditional parade took place in Drama to celebrate the Anniversary of March 25, 1821. The police measures were intense, with the presence of many police officers, in uniform and with politicians, as well as railings around the official platform to avoid any attempt at rapprochement.

A group of citizens had gathered in the area in front of the Hotel "Xenia" to protest against the government policy.

Volos

The parade on the beach of Volos for the anniversary of March 25 took place under unprecedented security measures for the city of Volos and with hundreds of police officers on foot to avoid incidents.

For the first time, in fact, there were iron fences everywhere, designed to keep people away from official space.

Ζάκυνθος

In Zakynthos, reactions arose when representatives of the Golden Dawn wanted to lay a wreath at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier, but the intervention of the police prevented the incidents. The anniversary events took place without the presence of a government representative.

No official platform was set up in the area of ​​the parade, however, the Metropolitan Mr. Dionysios, the PASOK MP M. Klaudianou, the mayor St. Bozikis and the deputy regional governor.
