"Funeral speech of the Minister of Interior at the funeral of the former DISY Famagusta MP Antonis Kara

Our dear Antonis Karas, I came here as a friend to say goodbye. At the same time, however, I would like to convey to you the good trip of another of our mutual friends and competitors, the President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiadis who, unfortunately, due to the talks on the Cyprus issue, could not be with us.

He brought us here a painful task today, to address you with the last joy. You suddenly left your last breath last Sunday at your home - an abdominal aortic aneurysm, the doctors said - without being able to say hello. Leaving all of us who knew you as your friends and competitors, who lived you up close during the years of your parliamentary activity but also the years of your wider social contribution to our homeland and our people. You left early, mourning and grief your inconsolable wife Magda, your children Xenia and Christos and your grandson Andreas. You still had a lot to offer friend, competitor and companion Antonis. But this is what God wanted.

Saying goodbye to a political figure who enlightened society, who served principles and values, especially when it comes to a friend and a competitor, is not an easy task. And words seem poor and unable to describe the dimensions of your personality and offer. Your contribution to the struggles of our faction, DISY, and to the efforts of the Cypriot Hellenism for liberation from the Turkish military occupation, for freedom and justification, was very significant and catalytic.

Antonis Karas was born in 1947 in Paralimni. He studied Law and Political Science in Athens. He actively participated in the student movement and was elected for two terms President of the Federation of Student Unions of Cyprus OEFEK. After being deported from Famagusta, he practiced law in Larnaca. During the Turkish invasion of 1974 he took part in the operations against the Turks as a Battalion Commander in the area of Agios Pavlos in Nicosia and for his actions he was nominated for the Medal of Excellence. Thanks to the heroic resistance of Antonis Karas and his competitors, the Imprisoned Memorials of the legendary EOKA fighters of 1955-59 remained free, so that today we can worship them and pay tribute to those who gave us our freedom.

Antonis Karas adorned and brightened the seats of the Parliament as few people did, with the seriousness that distinguished him and the deep knowledge he had about all the issues that concerned him.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that the deceased was the ideal combination of scientist / lawyer and politician, a model of devotion to the national and public interest and a servant of the living social, national and social reality. Constantly fighting for the justification of our people.

The awarding of the prize is not, of course, exhausted for funeral reasons. Honoring means to draw an example from his racing course and in practice. Strongly fighting for the end of the occupation, the unity of the state, the guarantee of the human rights and the basic freedoms of the entire Cypriot people.

With prudence, of course, and with responsibility, but also with rejection of the logic of accepting the superior power of the conqueror, we continue the effort for a final settlement of the Cyprus problem. 43 years is a lot. That's enough! Friend Antonis, many others had left before you with the desire to return unfulfilled. That's enough! We can not bear to say goodbye to friends with unfulfilled desires.

Friend Antonis,

Death is not the end. It is the starting point of wider recognition and mainly the proclamation of your ideals as symbols that inspire and guide. Your biological absence will highlight your beliefs even more strongly and will justify your visions.

Features, but also talents that emerged through your active presence in the political events of the place and that the people recognized by solemnly emerging as a Member of Parliament from 1993 to 2006. You were a politician of moderation and truth. That is why the universal grief for your unfortunate loss. You will remain alive in our spirit and in our soul.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to your beloved family, as well as to the large DISY faction. that you have served so faithfully and unselfishly all these years.

Have a good trip my dear friend and competitor Antonis.
May your memory be eternal. ”
