"I saw the bear climbing the two-meter fence with ease, even showing its small way. "He then entered the estate and" crushed "the cherries of the tree", Mr. Panagiotopoulos explains to APE-MPE, adding that the bear, which is still breastfeeding its baby, has been seen many times near Kastoria.

"At this time he eats large amounts of fruits, such as cherries and apples in order to accumulate fat to be ready for hibernation," says Mr. Panagiotopoulos, who has often found bear feces full of pits, indicative of the quantities he eats. the wild animal.

"The bad thing is," he continues, "that the bear, when it climbs to eat, crumbles and breaks the branches, destroying the tree, while previously it may have consumed up to 5 kilos of cherries!".

He himself, as a precautionary measure of the producers, proposes the timely collection of fruits as well as the halloween from outdoor areas, the cleaning of adjacent plots of land from dense vegetation, the guarding of shepherd dogs and the installation, where possible, of electric fencing as essential. measure to prevent wildlife.

"If a producer has -for example- two well-trained dogs, the bear will get scared and leave, especially now that she is a mom and has her little one, she is not easily involved in. Riots. However, if someone encounters a bear, it is recommended to keep his composure - as much as possible - not to move threateningly towards him or his babies with various objects and to gradually step back, leaving the animal an escape space ".
