The epilogue to the attempt to find the twin 9-year-old girls Sofia and Vasiliki Filippopoulou that shocked the nation in recent days is tragic.

According to DNA identifications, the unfortunate girls, as well as their grandparents, are among the victims of the deadly fire in Mati.

The car of the girls' grandfather had been found burned outside the plot where a total of 26 people had found a horrible end embracing in the flames, who had encountered a dead end there in their attempt to reach the sea to escape the blaze.

An Amber Alert from Child Smile was also issued to find them. According to ERT, the parents have been informed about the painful development.

The bodies of the girls were identified, as confirmed by the private investigator George Tsoukalis who had undertaken the task of searching for them.

According to ERT, the twin girls, together with their grandparents, were found embracing in the field in Mati, where the 26 people were found dead.

On Friday morning, the parents of the twins were called to the Laboratory of the Forensic Medicine Service to donate additional genetic material. The couple also brought personal belongings of their children in order to cross with the DNA of victims who are already in the morgue.

The girls were on holiday with their grandparents in Eastern Attica and have been missing since the fire broke out on Monday.

Their father, Giannis Filippopoulos, thought that he recognized them in a TV station shot from a boat that transported survivors to the port of Rafina and asked for help from anyone who knew something to give information about their fate. It was soon clarified, however, that the girls on board were not the twins and since then the effort to locate them has begun.

The story of the twin 9-year-old Filippopoulos girls caused pan-Hellenic emotion. Unfortunately, late on Friday night the news became known that the two girls are dead.
