The Austrian government announced today that it is "ready to take measures to protect its southern borders, in particular those with Italy and Slovenia", following restrictions on the entry of migrants into Germany announced by Berlin under the agreement on resolving the intergovernmental crisis.

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurtz said:

"The Austrian government is prepared to take action to protect our southern borders."

The agreement reached late Monday between the Christian Democrats of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Christian Social Union of Bavaria settled a series of immigration threats that threatened to overthrow the German government.

It is recalled that the Austrian government warned that it could "take measures to protect" its borders, as Germany planned restrictions on the entry of immigrants as part of an agreement to prevent a political crisis in Berlin.
