No petrol and diesel in cars, from 2035, according to a proposal from the European Commission, in an effort to reduce emissions.

More specifically, from 2035 onwards, the sale of cars equipped with internal combustion engines is prohibited.

The Commission is also seeking a 55% reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2030, compared to 2021 levels, raising the previous reduction target to 37,5%.

Finally gasoline and diesel, electric cars are coming

The proposals are part of a larger climate package, which was presented and aims to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles.

To boost sales of electric cars, Brussels also proposed legislation requiring countries to install public charging stations every 60 kilometers on major roads by 2035.

According to the plan, 3,5 million public charging stations are planned for cars and trucks by 2030, increasing them to 16,3 million points by 2050, where Europe also aims to be the first continent on Earth with zero emissions.

The Commission estimates that € 80-120 billion will need to be spent on public and private chargers across the EU by 2040.

It is noted that the first reactions have already begun with the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) opposing the ban schedule, stressing that internal combustion engines, including hybrids, are needed to help transition to electric propulsion.

This Commission proposal requires the approval of the Member States and the European Parliament, a process that could take up to two years.
