Peru has suspended clinical trials of the vaccine COVID-19 of the Chinese Sinopharm due to a "serious side effect" caused by one of the volunteers, the Peruvian government said in a statement today.

The Ministry of Health announced that the incident "is under investigation to determine if it is related to the vaccine or if there is any other explanation".

Sinopharm Group Co Ltd, which conducts clinical trials in Peru with about 12.000 volunteers, was ready to complete the first phase of the trials in the next few days.

So far from covid-19 about 36.544 people have died in Peru.

"The decision to temporarily suspend clinical trials is a safety measure provided by clinical trials regulations and protocols to protect the health of volunteers," the health ministry said in a statement.

German Malaga, lead researcher at the University of Peru Cayetano Heredia, who is involved in the research, said one volunteer felt weakness in his legs, among other symptoms.
