The Czech Honorary Consulate in Jerusalem reopens

Has reopened its honorary consulate in Jerusalem, the Czech Republic, which closed 2016, after the death of the former consul.

Dan Proper, Honorary Consul
"I see my contribution above all from the point of view of financial relations, as I have ties with the local business community"

Born in Tel Aviv, Proper's parents left Czechoslovakia in 1939, shortly before World War II broke out.

The opening of a Czech center in the city will follow, based on a plan presented by Czech Prime Minister Andrei Babis in April.

This decision "has no effect on the final agreement on the status of Jerusalem", as "the Czech Republic fully respects the common position of the European Union, which considers Jerusalem to be the future capital of the two states", Israel and the future independent state of Palestine, the Czech Foreign Ministry had assured at the time.

For his part, Czech President Milos Zeman is adamantly in favor of moving the Czech embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem today. But his wish will not come true unless approved by the Government, which is not taken for granted.
