More than 20 million cases of the new coronavirus have been officially recorded in Europe since the virus reached the continent in early 2020, according to a count of the French Agency based on reports from the health authorities, today at 15.15 Cyprus time.

Europe's 52 countries are the most affected by the number of cases in the world, ahead of the United States and Canada (15,4 million cases) and Latin America (13,6 million). In total, more than 67 million cases Covid-19 have been detected worldwide since the beginning of the pandemic

In the last seven days, the region has recorded almost 40% of all new cases detected worldwide, but the evolution of the virus seems to be stabilizing on the continent, with a 2% drop in cases compared to the previous week. Nearly 236.000 new daily cases have been recorded in the last seven days in the region.

Meanwhile, the Swiss and Italian railways are temporarily suspending cross-border traffic due to measures to tackle the coronavirus. From 10 December 2020, Swiss (SBB) and Italian Railways (Trenitalia) trains will no longer run across the border indefinitely, Swiss Railways (SBB) announced.

"The decision is due to a decree of the Italian government," the Swiss Railways (SBB) said.

"Italy demands checks that Switzerland cannot guarantee," said a spokesman for Swiss Railways SBB, including measuring passengers' temperature and taking a negative coronavirus test.
