Philippines: Gunman holds 30 hostages in mall

SHOPPING CENTER, ARMED, MANILA, hostages, PHILIPPINES

Heavily armed police are deployed in a shopping mall in Manila where, according to information transmitted by the Philippine media, a former guard has taken dozens of people hostage.

The mayor in the capital's neighborhood where the mall is located told the press that the guard was holding about thirty hostages in an office of the administrative services and had already shot a man.

"The first information we have (…) is that he has firearms and grenades. "There is already a man who was hit by a bullet and taken to hospital," said Francis Samora, mayor of the San Juan district.

The mall was full of customers and employees, who were called to leave the building when at least one shot was heard.

Shopping malls in Manila, where restaurants, clinics and even churches operate, are considered important for social life in the country.
