A woman from South Africa gave birth to twelve

A South African woman has given birth to 10 babies in a single pregnancy, setting a new world record.

Gosiame's husband, Thamara Sithole, said they were surprised to find out they were expecting ten babies as only eight had been seen in prenatal tests.

"There are seven boys and three girls. I'm happy. I'm emotionally charged. "I can't talk much," her husband, Teboho Tsotetsi, told Pretoria News after the babies were born on Monday night.

The 37-year-old mom had given birth to twins in the past, who are now six years old.

The woman is said to be in good health after giving birth by caesarean section at 29 weeks, on Monday night.

A South African official has confirmed the birth of the twins to the BBC. For its part, the Guinness Book of World Records told the BBC it was investigating Ms Sithole's case.

Until recently, the record for most births to survive was held by a woman who gave birth to eight babies in the United States in 2009.

Last month, 25-year-old Halima Cissé from Mali gave birth to nine babies who are said to be in good health. They are being treated in a clinic in Morocco.

Births with more than three babies are rare and often the result of artificial insemination but in this case the couple says they conceived normally.

Speaking to Pretoria News a month ago, the mother of 12 said her pregnancy was "tough at first" and she was worried about her babies' survival.
