Dozens of homes have been destroyed and hundreds displaced by a massive wildfire in Riverside, California, caused by a garbage truck dumping piles of burning rubbish in a vegetated area.

A spokesman for the Riverside Fire Department told the Los Angeles Times that the fire started for unknown reasons in the garbage truck and the driver threw the cargo in an attempt to save the vehicle.

It is one of 275 wildfires across California as hot winds mark the beginning of a difficult period, according to government officials.

Hundreds of thousands of people near San Francisco and northern California were left without electricity yesterday after a power outage by PG&E due to weather conditions that favored the outbreak of large forest fires.

"No state in the 21st century should face 'power outages' so 'extensive,' California Gov. Gavin Newsom said yesterday, blaming the company for" mismanagement "of its network, which has not been modernized.
