At least one person has been killed in a magnitude 6,5 earthquake that struck Japan's Indonesia on Friday night, according to the US Geological Survey.

The USGS said the epicenter was at a depth of 92 kilometers (57 miles), about 52 km southwest of Tasikmalaya.

Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency said the quake triggered tsunami alert systems in southern Java, but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no tsunami alert was issued.

The tremors were felt in central and western Java and caused minor damage to some buildings.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the disaster service, said at least one person had been killed, several houses damaged and a hospital evacuated.

Authorities say no casualties have been reported so far.

National Disaster Relief Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said there were reports of damaged houses in the town of Tasikmalaya, about 50km from the epicenter.

"We are still assessing the impact of the earthquake and will inform later"
