Residents of Reykjavik are divided, half wanting to stay or the other half want to retire immediately

When Steinun Gunlaugsdottir was invited to take part in the Icelandic music and art festival "Cycle", she decided to do something different. Thus, the Icelandic artist created a sculpture, which was placed on Lake Ternin, in the center of Reykjavik.

This is a large pink sculpture reminiscent of a hot dog, with a fish tail. Its view, however, brings other associations. And the people of Reykjavik are divided, half wanting to stay or the other half wanting to retire immediately.

The sculpture "Little Hufflesan" - as its creator called it - "converses" with a version of the "Little Mermaid" a copy of the statue in the port of Copenhagen, which Denmark donated to Iceland in the 1940s (Iceland was previously a colony of Denmark). The prototype was vandalized on January 1, 1960.

"The idea (for the sculpture) comes from a project of mine which I have christened 'Democracy is a Hot Dog,'" Steinun explained. "I worked on it as a metaphor for democracy, in the context of a constant satire of my own about the elections," he added.

At the apocalypse, on the 26th of last month, the work was received with applause and laughter from the art lovers. But it is reminiscent of the male genitalia and many locals broke out on social media. "They want him to either retire immediately or stay there forever," Steinun said. It should be noted that the sculpture "sees" the Icelandic parliament and Reykjavik town hall.
