A fire that destroyed an abandoned bank branch in Barcelona, where two families had taken refuge, claimed the lives of four people this morning, firefighters said.

"Firefighters rescued four people and tried to bring four others (two adults, an infant and an infant) back to life, but they ended up," Barcelona firefighters wrote on Twitter.

The infant was three years old and the infant was three months old, broadcast the local television network TV3.

The other four people, who were rescued and removed from the scene of the fire, are being treated out of danger.

The many abandoned buildings, which are unsuitable for living, but are illegally occupied by the homeless in Barcelona and its surrounding areas, pose a serious danger.

About a year ago, many people lost their lives in an abandoned warehouse, where many squatters had broken out in Badalona, a suburb of Barcelona.

A police spokeswoman said two families were staying at the bank branch. The cause of the fire is unknown and police are investigating.
