Kim Jong Un became the first North Korean leader to cross into South Korea on foot, crossing the military line that divided the peninsula with the end of the Korean War in 1953.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in met with Kim Jong Un at the border at 09:30 a.m. (local time) before the two began talks. The two leaders shook hands, in a historic but also symbolic moment.

The meeting of the two leaders will focus on the future of the peninsula, following recent statements by the North that it is halting its nuclear planning.

The North Korean leader signed the guest book at the House of Peace. "The new story begins now. "Here at the beginning of the era and the history of peace," wrote Kim Jong Un.

Crowds of people have gathered and are watching the meeting with enthusiasm.

The two leaders, after having their first contact, are going to have lunch separately.

The tree of peace

They will then plant a pine tree on the border as a "symbol of peace and prosperity". The movement is made even more symbolic by the fact that the tree will be planted with a mixture of soil from the mountains north and south and water from their rivers. The tree itself dates back to 1953, the year in which the armistice agreement between the South and the North was concluded.

After the ceremony, the two will resume talks. At the end they will sign a pact and make an announcement.

It is recalled that the North Korean leader will meet with US President Donald Trump.
