The popular parties have won ground in Italy's parliamentary elections, which did not bring a clear winner as votes were counted in the early hours of Monday morning.

Η The Five Star Movement is estimated to have won the most votes, while a center-right coalition appears to hold the most seats in the country's Senate.

According to national broadcaster RaiNews24, the Five Star Movement led by 31-year-old Luigi di Maio is expected to win more than 32% of the vote, no more than the 40% required to form a government.

Based on the timely counting of votes, the result looks like a victory for the center-right coalition mediated by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, which collectively is projected to hold the largest share of the vote - 35,5%.
The result, which consists of Berlusconi's Forza Italia, Matteo Salvini's far right and the neo-fascists, means he will have the most seats in parliament, but 4% less than 40%. .

Berlusconi's Forza Italia is expected to receive 14%, the xenophobic and populist Alliance, also known as the Northern League, is also expected to win 16%.
