Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, according to the Kremlin, have expressed their determination for their countries to continue working together to fight Islamic State.

The two leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to Syria's national sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.

At the same time, they called on all parties to the Syrian conflict to play an active role in the Geneva political process.

Moscow and Washington agree that there is no military solution to the problem, according to a joint statement on the Kremlin's website.

At the same time, Trump and Putin talked about de-escalation zones in Syria.

"President Trump and President Putin have reaffirmed the importance of de-escalation zones as an intermediate step in reducing violence in Syria. "They examined the progress of the ceasefire in southwestern Syria, which reached its final stage before implementation, the last time the two presidents met in Hamburg, in July 2017," the joint statement said.

The two leaders gave the green light for the text in a meeting they had on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Vietnam despite the White House announcing that no formal meeting would take place.
