A South African filmmaker was killed by a giraffe while filming it at a wildlife sanctuary on the outskirts of Johannesburg, the park's owner said.

The giraffe killed Carlos Carvalho by hitting him on the head in Glen Afric Country Lodge in North West.

The 47-year-old victim, a father of two, was killed while trying to capture the giraffe close-up.

"Carlos was standing in front of the giraffe when the animal opened its legs, bent its neck and leaned towards Carlos," said Richard Brucker, whose family owns the shelter, on Netwerk24 Afrikaans.

The giraffe, named Gerald, "did nothing wrong," he added.

For its part, the South African film company Callacrew clarified that the unfortunate filmmaker died on Wednesday night.

"We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Carlos Carvalho, one of our company's most beloved photography directors," Callacrew said on her Facebook account.

"Carlos was shooting at Glen Afric and had a fatal encounter with a giraffe."
