G7 joint statement on Russia's aggressive stance

They welcomed Ukraine's restraint and said they would step up co-operation in their joint and comprehensive response to Russia.

The Foreign Ministers of the G7, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United Kingdom United States and the High Representative of the European Union, according to the office of the US State Department Spokesman.

They also called on Russia to escalate tensions, pursue diplomatic channels and abide by its international commitments on the transparency of its military activities, as President Biden did in his December 7 meeting with President Putin. They reiterated their support for the efforts of France and Germany in the Normandy Group to achieve full implementation of the Minsk Agreements in order to resolve the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

Any use of force to change borders is strictly prohibited by international law. Russia must have no doubt that a further military strike on Ukraine would have enormous consequences and serious costs in response, they said in a statement.

They reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, as well as the right of any sovereign state to determine its own future. They praised Ukraine's restraint and said they would step up co-operation in their joint and comprehensive response to Russia.
