A plane preparing to take off was hit by rockets at Tripoli airport on the same day that the UN envoy and the French ambassador were in Libya to discuss a peace plan for the country.

A rocket hit an Airbus 320 and the others crashed in the arrival hall of Mitiga airport around 3 am (Greek time). No injuries were reported.

UN special envoy Gassan Salameh and French diplomat Brigitte Courme arrived at the same airport, the only one operating in the Libyan capital. It is not clear if they arrived before or after the attack.

Tripoli is controlled by many different armed groups after the 2011 uprising and the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi. Since 2014, there have been two rival governments, one in Tripoli and one in eastern Libya, while most diplomatic missions have left the country and moved their services to neighboring Tunisia.

RADA, an airport security service linked to Libya's internationally recognized government, said the rockets were fired by men loyal to a paramilitary leader, Bashir al-Bugra.

Kourmi met with government officials at noon while Salameh had contacts with government officials in the early afternoon. When asked if there will be elections in Libya this year, he replied: "Of course. We promised that to the United Nations Security Council. "

Mitiga is an air base near the center of Tripoli from which civil services are operated since the international airport was destroyed and closed in 2014.
