Large 7,1 magnitude earthquake off Japan

An earthquake measuring 7,1 on the Richter scale struck off Japan, according to an estimate by the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center.

The epicenter was reported below the island of Honshu, 84 km from Isinomaki and 100 km from Sendai.

This is a sea area off Fukushima. The focal depth of the earthquake is estimated at 60 km.

So far, no tsunami alert has been issued and no damage has been reported.

The earthquake occurred at 23.08 local time (16.08 Greek time) and was particularly felt in the capital of Japan, Tokyo.

The country's Meteorological Agency said that "although there may be some slight changes in sea level in coastal areas, the quake did not cause damage in Japan."

No problems were reported at the Tokaimura nuclear plant, according to the public television channel NHK.

Ten years ago, on March 11, 2011, after a strong earthquake of 9-9,1 degrees in Sendai, Honshu, a huge tsunami hit the Japanese coast, which in the following days caused a series of explosions at the Fukushima I nuclear plant, resulting in to dangerously raise radioactivity levels in the area.
