A man allegedly behind the killing of a police reporter in northern Mexico earlier this year has been arrested by federal police, the governor of Chihuahua, Javier Coral, said in a statement.

The suspect, named in the announcement as Juan Carlos Moreno Ochoa, or "El Larry", was arrested in the neighboring state of Sonora on Monday and is said to have been the "moral perpetrator" of the murder of journalist Miroslava Britz, according to the statement.

Miroslava Brids, 54, was killed by an executioner as she was leaving her home garage on March 23. One of her children was with her in the car, but was not injured. A man believed to be Bric's executioner, Ramon Andres Savala, was killed last week in Sonora, Coral said in a statement.

Moreno Ochoa will be brought before a judge to be charged, the statement added. Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries in the world for media workers by the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Since 2000, at least 111 journalists and media workers have been killed in Mexico, with 38 deaths since Enrique Pena Nieto took office in December 2012, according to Article 19.

In 2017, 12 journalists were murdered in Mexico.
