Fifty-three migrants were killed Thursday when a truck carrying them to southeastern Mexico overturned, prosecutors said, revising the death toll for the worse.
Earlier, the same source had mentioned 49 dead.
"So far we have 53 dead and three other people are very seriously injured," the attorney general said in a statement, without specifying the nationalities of the victims.
According to a Civil Protection official in the Mexican state of Chiapas, they were mainly citizens of neighboring Guatemala. Earlier it was reported that many victims were Honduran nationals.
Transporting migrants by truck, mainly from Central America - who are trying to reach the United States in the hope of finding a better life, being saved from gang violence and misery in their homelands - is a common method of traffickers.
