Netflix is conducting anti-password testing: Some users have reported the message "If you do not live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep track of them".

A Netflix spokesman told the BBC that "this test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are allowed to do so".

It has not yet been decided whether the company will take similar actions throughout its network. As part of this test, users can confirm whether they are allowed to access the account via a code, which is sent via message or email.

Netflix is trying to tackle the phenomenon of "irregular" users, although it is unclear how many use its platform in violation of the terms of use.

Streaming platforms such as Netflix, HBO Go, Amazon Prime and Disney + allow users to create multiple profiles within an account, but the terms and conditions specify that their use is permitted only by household members.

During a 2016 webcast, Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings said that password sharing is something you have to learn to live with, because there is so much legal password sharing as sharing it with / the wife, with your children, so there is no clear line and we are doing well as it is ".

In October 2019, Greg Peters, chief product officer, said the company was considering code sharing, but said it had no "big plans to announce" at the time whether it was doing anything different.
