South Korea: Dozens injured in 5,4 magnitude earthquake

Nearly 60 people were injured and more than 1.500 were forced to flee their homes and be taken to temporary shelters in South Korea by a 5,4-magnitude earthquake in the southeastern port of Pohang, authorities said today.

The quake, a very rare phenomenon in the country, struck on Wednesday and had a relatively small focal depth of nine kilometers. The tremor was felt across the country, including Seoul, and damaged nearly 1.100 homes and more than 100 schools, according to the Ministry of Security.

Roads, military and public buildings and infrastructure were damaged, while 57 people were injured and 1.536 were forced to flee their homes. Due to the earthquake, the national entrance exams for the university, which would start today, were postponed for a week.

The strongest earthquake recorded in South Korea was in September 2016 with a magnitude of 5,8.
