The daily number of deaths due to COVID-19 in Poland during the fourth wave of the pandemic reached the record level of 660, the government spokesman said today, as the country is trying to deal with the highest infection rates with stricter restrictions.

"This is the impact of the last few weeks, when the cases have accumulated. "They are mostly unvaccinated," said Peter Miller, a spokesman for Radio Zet.

The Minister of Health is expected to officially announce the new death toll later. Miller said more than 24.000 new cases would also be reported.

The highest death toll in 24 hours during the pandemic in Poland is 954 and was recorded in April this year.

Poland is currently implementing new measures to tackle the spread of the virus, further reducing the number of people attending certain public places, such as restaurants, and closing nightclubs.

Countries around the world are tightening restrictions on the festive season following the appearance of the Omicron variant last month, which has now been identified in 77 countries.

"There is no doubt that Omicron is already in Poland; within the EU, we have free movement of people, so it is clear that this variant should be in Poland," Miller said.
