"A pregnant woman was infected with the coronavirus, her baby was born infected," a spokesman for the regional health ministry told Russia's TASS news agency.
"They are at home, their state of health is satisfactory," he said.
An infant who had been infected by Covid-19 was already born in mid-April in Peru, with the country's health authorities claiming at the time that it was the "second case" of its kind worldwide.
In North Ossetia, the baby with the new coronavirus was born at Beslan Central Hospital, where 17 of the 35 pregnant women waiting to give birth had contracted the disease. Covid-19, according to the head of the maternity hospital Hasan Tagayev, who spoke on a local television network.
Russia ranks second in the world, after the United States, in the number of new coronavirus cases, with a total of 281.752 confirmed cases and 2.631 deaths.
