More than 5.600 people were forced to flee their homes and some fifty municipalities were declared a state of emergency due to heavy rains and floods in the Brazilian states of Bahia (northeast) and Minas Gerais (southeast).

The worst-hit areas are in the southern state of Bahia, where 3.740 people have been displaced and more than 70.000 injured, according to the fire department, after a week of rain flooding homes, flooding rivers and cutting off roads in waist and destroying bridges.

The governor of Bahia has declared a state of emergency in at least XNUMX municipalities. Most affected were the municipalities of Itamarazu, where three people were killed, Zucourousso, Porto Seguro, Prado and Teixeira de Freitas.

President Zaih Bolsonaro and several of his ministers inspected the damage in the affected areas of Bahia from the air. In the northern part of Mina Zerais, which borders Bahia, the rains caused the displacement of more than 1.900 inhabitants, according to the Civil Protection, while 31 municipalities were put in a state of emergency. The Brazilian government has ordered the deployment of army units to assist in rescue operations and to build temporary accommodation for the displaced.
