Twelve people have been killed and 21 others injured in an attack on the Somali Interior Ministry in the capital Mogadishu.

The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a rally in central Mogadishu.

In particular, two cars with explosive devices were set on fire by members of the Al Shabab organization.

Nine people were killed in the attack by the terrorist organization, while the Somali security forces killed three of the terrorists during an exchange of gunfire.

Dozens of Interior Ministry officials and civilians were trapped in the building and according to testimonies some jumped out of the windows to escape, resulting in serious injuries or even loss of life.

According to the head of the security forces, dozens of people fled the premises of the Ministry, while many ambulances arrived at the scene for the injured.

The director of the Ambulance Service, Abdikadir Abdirahman, said the death toll could rise.

Al-Shabab, which claimed responsibility for the attack, wants to overthrow the Somali government and create a government based on its own interpretation of Islamic law.
