A car race organized by a military academy in Sri Lanka ended in tragedy when one of the vehicles crashed into spectators, killing seven people and injuring 20.

A further 21 people were injured – some in critical condition – as a car plowed into the 100,000-strong crowd at a motor rally event near the town of Diyatalawa on Sunday, with an eight-year-old girl among the dead.

According to Sky News the accident occurred in the city of Diyatalawa which is located 180 km east of the city of Colombo.
Around 45.000 spectators watched this leg of the match.

So far, the cause of the accident in the race remains unclear.
According to a police representative, four of the seven dead are match officials, while three of the injured are hospitalized in critical condition.
