One of Europe's most crucial elections of the year is under way, with Italians voting in parliamentary elections that could push the country into a state of political paralysis.

The Italians faced chronic economic stagnation, staggering unemployment and relentless migration, igniting an anti-EU, anti-establishment uprising that could see the populist Five Star Movement (M5S) emerge as the only major party in Parliament.

But celebrities are waiting. Four-year-old Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has formed a center-right coalition between Forza Italia's party and Matteo Salvini's far-right Northern League along with Italy's neo-fascist brothers.

Matteo Renzi, the center-left reformer who passed in 2016 after the failure of a controversial constitutional referendum, is also a candidate for leader of the center-left Democratic Party (PD). Although the final poll showed that the party reached 22,8%.
