Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the May 12 election in Iraq on May XNUMX for the first time since its inception.
In a statement on the Telegram website, the IK claimed responsibility for the assassination of Farouk Zarzour al-Zumbouri, a Sunni candidate with the party of Iraqi Vice President Iliad Alawi, in the Mosul area.
Zubouri was shot dead at his home in the Mosul area, once a stronghold of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), a local official said.
"Unidentified gunmen killed this National Alliance candidate in the early hours of today," said Salah al-Zubouri, a local official in the town of Kayara, about 70 kilometers (XNUMX miles) south of Mosul. "They shot him dead after invading his house."
