The Parliamentary Committee on Institutions, Values and Administration Commissioner has decided to postpone today's debate on the Code of Conduct for Members of Parliament, in protest of Al Jazeera's recent revelations.

As stated by the Chairman of the Committee, DISY MP Zacharias Zachariou, as the competent Committee of the Parliament of Institutions and Values, they want to send their own political message that in the field of politics there are honest people and determined to enact the right laws, the right codes of ethics , right where did you come from, which today is a social demand of the Cypriot society.

"Cypriot society has an absolute right to see us and spit on us. We gave the right ", he said, adding that the Commission has the institutional obligation to send the message that it adapts and works to the specific situation. At the same time, he said, the work that has been started, especially for the lusts and the code of conduct of the deputies, will be completed, so that there is a clear control, the politician is controlled and there is transparency and every citizen knows exactly who is in front of him and who should to vote.

Asked if it was a parliamentary strike, Mr. Zachariou said that he did not consider it a parliamentary strike, but a political message sent by the Institutions Committee, a political message of solidarity with civil society, that they are here with their ears open, unanimously all the deputies of the Committee of Institutions to work in the specific course which he described, as he said, before.

AKEL MP Aristos Damianos said that the Committee unanimously decided to postpone its meeting, stating that the events of the last few days are known and the intention of almost all political forces to demonstrate political correctness and the resignation of the Speaker of Parliament.

With the postponement of the session, he said, they send a unanimous message that the proper functioning of the Parliament and the need to restore institutions and values are paramount.

DIKO MP Pavlos Mylonas stated that there was no other choice for the Institutions Committee than to send this message to the civil society, trying to save what is left of the prestige of the Parliament. He expressed the view that it was a wise decision to postpone, in order to send the message that behaviors that offend both Parliament and the state can not be accepted.
He also read an excerpt from the code of conduct of the deputies as submitted to them, according to which: "It is understood that the conduct of the Member in his private life must be prudent, decent and worthy of the mission and the importance given to the conscience of the citizen in the parliamentary office, so that it does not cause and / or in any way creates the menin and / or the discredit to the person of the Member of Parliament and the parliamentary office ". Also: "it means that, during the exercise of his duties, the Member of Parliament does not behave in any way or acts in any way in order to serve exclusively, in a discriminatory manner and to the detriment of the general public and / or the public interest the interests of a specific person, group persons and / or a specific organized group ".

Earlier, the MP of the Movement of Ecologists, George Perdikis, had mentioned that he proposed to the Institutions Committee, the first strike of MPs in the history of the House of Representatives, sending the message that the Speaker of the House, Dimitris Syllouris, must resign.

Mr. Perdikis said that he considers it unthinkable to discuss the code of conduct of the deputies, at a time when the head of the Parliament is charged with such a serious accusation.

"The ethics of the deputies have been found on the floor. "If there is a discussion issue for the ethics of deputies, there will be after the resignation of Mr. Syllouris", said Mr. Perdikis.

He added that he, as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Ethics and Transparency for Members of the House of Representatives, will not chair the Committee.

"We have called together with the deputies of DIKO and AKEL the Chairman of the Committee of Institutions not to meet either the Committee of Institutions", he stated.

He added that there is no issue of institutions in Parliament as long as Mr. Syllouris chairs the Parliament.

"The Parliamentary Institutions Committee has been abolished and will not be revived except with the immediate resignation of Mr. Syllouris," he said.
