The daily cases will be launched up to 2.000 if Omicron has invaded the community, estimates the epidemiologist Dr. Voniatis, noting in KYPE that tomorrow, Friday, it will be known if Omicron has entered the community, after laboratory tests.

"We have a continuous upward trend and in fact a significant increase in the last ten days. More than 800 cases have been reported [daily] in the last two days, approaching 900 cases and this situation seems to be related to the outbreak of Omicron. "By tomorrow, we will know if a number of almost 100 cases are Omicron," he said.

As he mentioned, 33 cases have already been reported, which means that Omicron has passed to the community. "So what we are going to see is an increase in cases. The question is how many of them will need treatment. Unfortunately we can see an increase in the number of patients among those who have been vaccinated. "So it is wise on Christmas day to do a rapid test or a self-test before sitting at the Christmas table whether we are vaccinated or not," he noted.

The people, he continued, must be careful, to observe the personal protection measures with reverence because we still do not know what the protection will be even with the third dose of the vaccine, since the epidemiological researches have not come out yet.

He said that there are important findings from laboratory tests that indeed the third dose strengthens the system a lot and the antibodies increase significantly but he said that in practice we do not know what the results will be.

Asked when we will know if Omicron has joined the community, Dr. Voniatis said that "we will know tomorrow with some certainty".

I believe, he continued, that they will exceed 1.000 if Omicron has invaded and maybe in the coming weeks we will see 1.500 and 2.000 cases.

"What we insist on is to observe personal protection measures, because we do not yet know what the severity of the disease is, that is, what percentage of people who are ill will be severe. Because most people get sick lightly, from what we know today. "Beyond that, we must abide by the measures because we do not know what will happen yet," he added.

He stressed that we need to do a self-test since they are now available before we sit at the festive table. "We will not lose anything, but we will be sure that we are negative and we will not transmit the disease to anyone," he concluded.
