The Commission is currently examining compliance with Community law of the Cypriot passport return program to investors in view of possible infringement proceedings, Commission spokesman Christian Vigad said today, following the revelations of Al Jazeera television.
Specifically, when asked by KYPE, the responsible representative of the Commission, Christian Wiegand, stated that “we observed with skepticism how high-ranking officials traded European citizenship for financial gain. "President von der Leyen was clear when she said that European values are not for sale."
"The Commission has often expressed its serious concerns about investor citizenship schemes, also directly with the Cypriot authorities. "The Commission is currently examining compliance with Community law in the Cypriot system with a view to possible infringement proceedings," the spokesman said.
"We are aware of the latest statements of the Government and we expect the competent Cypriot authorities to thoroughly examine this case," he concluded.
