The main commercial avenue of Makarios GI in Nicosia opens after almost two years. As can be seen from the photos, the work for tomorrow's opening is hectic. However, as the shopkeepers told Economy today, "by tomorrow everything will be ready"…
With the opening of Makarios III, the second phase of the renovation of the commercial triangle "Stasikratous - Makarios - Evagorou" is completed. It is recalled that the BD phase was delayed due to various complications that were caused by the coronavirus pandemic. However, the Municipality of Nicosia, with an additional budget of 850 thousand euros, accelerated the works in order for the main avenue and the shops to open during the peak shopping period, Christmas.
However, as can be seen from photos that exist on the internet, and specifically on the facebook page "YESTERYEARS OF NICOSIA - YEFTER YEZERY - LEFKOŞA'NIN GEÇMİŞ YILLARI", the main avenue of the capital, is not "ignorant" of work and… upgrades.

From tomorrow until January 15, Makariou Avenue will be open for pedestrians only. Despite the decision of the Municipal Council for free passage of vehicles until the completion of the third phase of the renovation (estimated at the end of 2022), the Traffic Studies Agency decided that Makariou will remain open only for pedestrians, at least until January 15. Discussions and meetings will then take place in order to re-decide the traffic regulation.
However, the opinions among the shopkeepers differ. Speaking to Economy Today, several shopkeepers favored the passage of vehicles, while many others favor the original proposal provided for in the renovation plan for the passage of only residents, employees in the area's shops, taxis and buses. There were also placements that support the complete pedestrianization of Makarios III.
Although they count down, shopkeepers and crews of the Municipality, run for the last works in order to be all ready for tomorrow's opening.
