"Omicron" spreads in Cyprus - Another 63 cases of the new variant have been identified

More than 20 cases have been identified within the community

As part of the strict control carried out in the Republic of Cyprus in the light of the new Omicron mutation, the Ministry of Health informs that after the sequencing 192 samples of positive cases with collection dates from 11 December 2021 to 19 December 2021, carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, with the company NIPD and after analyzing the data from the Laboratory of Molecular Virology of the University of Cyprus, 59 positive samples were detected with the Omicron variant. In addition, another 4 samples were confirmed by sequencing from the airports as Omicron, by the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics.

  • From 192 samples, the 80 were collected at airports, the 9 samples were taken from residents of the Eden Rehabilitation Center and the 103 samples were collected from the community.
  • Specifically, 34 cases of Omicron variant (B.1.1.529) concerned samples collected at airports, 7 from Eden and 22 from the community.
