The number of registered unemployed fell to the lowest level since August 2009 in February 2020. The data announced by the Statistical Service reflect the great improvement in the labor market due in part to the better economic climate and the tendency of companies to hire.

Based on the data kept at the District Labor Offices, the number of registered unemployed at the end of February 2020, reached 25.620 persons. According to seasonally adjusted data, which show the trend of unemployment, the number of registered unemployed in February 2020 decreased to 19.740 persons compared to 19.978 in the previous month.

The sector with the highest unemployment by economic activity in February was in hotels and catering services 9.214 mainly due to the suspension of units for the winter season. In wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles the registered unemployed are 4.212, in processing 1.426, in administrative and support activities 1.018, in public administration and defense, compulsory social security 1.003, in education related to health 482, in health and social welfare 339, in arts, entertainment and recreation 514.

The occupations with the highest unemployment in February were service workers, salesmen 8.305, clerks, typists, cleaners, messengers and unskilled workers 6.104, cashiers 3.859, qualified and other specialists 1.728, technical assistants 1.204, craftsmen-engineers -1.145 managers and administrators 1.012, military 856, farmers & skilled agricultural workers 41. Most unemployed in February were aged between 52-30 and reached 39 and the second age group is between 6.656-50 and reached 59. Between the ages of 5.841-40 the unemployed were 49 and between 5.700-30 they reach 39. The unemployed under 6.656 are 20, between 147-20 are 24 and between 1.362-25 are 29. In the age group from 3.191-60 the unemployed in February were 64. There are 2.544 people aged 65 and over. Most of the unemployed in February are in the province of Famagusta 179, in Nicosia 6.335, in Limassol 5.890, in Larnaca 5.114 and in Paphos 4.394. Of the registered unemployed, 3.887 were in general secondary education, 10.092 had primary education, 6.812 had higher education, 6.258 had secondary technical education and 2.299 were without education.

The duration of unemployment for the majority of the 10.836 registered unemployed is between 3 months and 6 months. For the 7.484 the duration of unemployment is from 15 days to 3 months, for the 2.767 from 6 months to 12 months, for 1.167 up to 15 days and from 12 months and up it is for the 3.369 unemployed. Unemployment figures announced by Statistics were commented positively by the Ministry of Finance. "The data confirm the Government's continued effort to drastically reduce unemployment, which is projected to fall further to 6% in 2020. Further improving the living standards of citizens remains high on the Government's priorities," the statement said.
