The sudden death of Louis Kyriakos, who collapsed and died suddenly at the age of 86, while shopping with his wife in Knox, Australia, caused grief to the Cypriot community in Australia.

According to the online newspaper Neos Kosmos, Kyriakou was born on January 2, 1933 in the village of Komi Kepir just outside Famagusta in Cyprus, while at the age of 18 he decided to expand his horizons and did not follow his brothers who had emigrated to London. He decided to immigrate to Australia.

In fact, according to the same publication, the money for the fare was borrowed from his father and he arrived in Melbourne with only a few coins in his pocket and half a suitcase with clothes. Like many other young immigrants he arrived without knowledge of English.

During his first years in Australia he did various manual jobs in the regional Victoria while in 1955 he returned to Cyprus to marry Eleni Georgiou from the village of Pano Lefkara.

The family then moved to South Melbourne.

According to the New World he was "a fighter for social justice to the end, without any retreat."
