A 26-year-old man was detained for a case of illegal drug possession, assault with causing real bodily harm to members of the Paphos Police, joint attack, resistance during his legal arrest, public insult and causing malicious damage.

According to a Representative of the Communication Branch of the Police Headquarters, at 18:00 yesterday afternoon, members of the Paphos Crime Prevention Unit went to the residence of a 26-year-old against whom an arrest warrant was pending. The 26-year-old when he noticed the police and during his immobilization allegedly insulted the members of the force, he resisted and bit a sergeant on the forearm, tearing his jacket while he allegedly beat a second police officer.

During his transfer, he continued to insult members of the force and spat on one of the two members who had previously beaten him.

During a physical search, he was allegedly found in possession of a handmade half-smoked cigarette containing a quantity of manufactured tobacco mixed with cannabis and was re-arrested for a self-inflicted crime.

The 26-year-old was subsequently charged in writing with the drug offenses and was released to be summoned later while continuing to be detained for the other offenses.

The members of the Paphos OPE visited the Accident and Emergency Department of the Paphos General Hospital and after receiving first aid they were fired.

Investigations into the case are ongoing.
