Cyprus: In the penultimate position regarding the study of students in technical education

Cyprus has quite low percentages in terms of students attending technical vocational education, as a result of which it is ranked in the penultimate position by the countries of the European Union, according to a relevant Eurostat report. Specifically in 2017, only 17% of secondary school students in Cyprus attended technical vocational education programs.

It is pointed out that vocational training programs are designed to provide students with the knowledge and the set of skills necessary for a specific professional activity or trade and their successful completion leads to the acquisition of professional qualifications related to the labor market, while being recognized as oriented towards a professional activity by the competent national authorities and / or the labor market.

In the EU as a whole, in 2017, 21,4 million students attended upper secondary education, of which over 10,2 million (or 48%) enrolled in vocational technical education.

In thirteen EU Member States, more than half of secondary school students attended related programs in 2017. The Czech Republic and Finland had the highest percentage of students (72%), followed by Slovenia (71%) and Croatia (70%). ), Austria and Slovakia (both 69%) and the Netherlands (68%). In the lowest positions are Ireland (10%), Cyprus (17%), Hungary (23%), Lithuania - Malta with 27%) and Greece (29%).

It is also noted that the majority of students who attended vocational and technical secondary education programs were male in every EU Member State except the United Kingdom (52%), Belgium and Sweden (and 51%) and Finland (slightly more). of 50%), where the majority were women. On the other hand, less than 40% of women in technical vocational education are registered in Cyprus (23%), Ireland (33%), Greece (34%), Lithuania (38%), Germany (37%), Italy (38%), Hungary and Poland (both 39%).
