Five new cases of coronavirus - Paphos Hospital closed

According to a recent update received today by the Ministry of Health from the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, five new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed.

Specifically, these are:

  • Two people who returned from Italy were under house arrest and contacted the competent authorities when they developed symptoms.
  • Two people who are under house arrest and had close contact with a confirmed case that had been identified in the previous days. They were examined in the context of tracking the contacts of the confirmed cases.
  • A person who was hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of Paphos General Hospital and had been visited by relatives from the United Kingdom.

In relation to the management of the case treated in the ICU of Paphos General Hospital, the State Health Services Organization in collaboration with the Epidemiological Surveillance Unit of the Ministry of Health has prepared an action plan that, among other things, provides for the tracing of contacts of the hospital and his close family circle, the closure of the hospital to the public and the disinfection of indoor and outdoor areas. The Epidemiological Surveillance Unit of the Ministry of Health has already started tracking the contacts of all five cases and will proceed to take samples for specialized examinations.

New Measures for Paphos Hospital

Following the announcement of a coronavirus case at Paphos Hospital, the State Health Services Organization (OKYPY), based on the advice of the Epidemiological Surveillance Unit, took the following measures to protect the health of both health professionals and Paphos Hospital staff, patients already on it:

  • The immediate closure of Paphos Hospital for 48 hours, so that all the appropriate disinfection actions can be done.
  • Samples are taken for examination by the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, all staff and all patients who are in the hospital units who may have come in contact with the patient or his visitor.
  • The tracking of all staff and patients has begun to identify possible cases.
  • Patients in the hospital are quarantined.
  • Visitation is prohibited for all patients for the next 48 hours.
  • All scheduled appointments, admissions and surgeries of all specialties are canceled for the next 48 hours, when the situation will be re-evaluated.
  • Any patient (who has not already entered the Hospital) in need of immediate treatment will be referred to the private sector. The Ministry of Health has already made the necessary arrangements,
  • Patients in all Provinces are invited to come to the Accident and Emergency Departments exclusively for emergencies. People who have traveled to affected areas in the last 14 days and show mild symptoms, please do not come to the TAEP of hospitals, stay at home and contact 1420 for instructions
