The Meteorological Department issued an orange warning this morning for prolonged heavy rains that are expected to affect Cyprus.

The orange warning went into effect today at 5 am and will last until tomorrow at 10 am.

The total rainfall locally is likely to range between 85 and 110 mm per 24 hours.

Barometric low created in the southern Ionian, affects the region. Sparse dust will be suspended in the atmosphere from time to time.

Today, the weather will be mostly cloudy with rain in several areas and isolated thunderstorms. At the highest peaks of Troodos, it will occasionally snow or sleet. Locally, the effects may be prolonged or even intense. The winds will blow mainly southwest, moderate to strong, 4 to 5 beauforts, but on the coast very strong and temporarily up to strong, 6 to 7 beauforts. The sea will be turbulent to wavy and in the leewards wavy and locally up to very wavy. The temperature will rise to 16 degrees inland, around 17 on the coast and 6 degrees in the higher mountains.

Tonight, the weather will remain mostly cloudy with rain in several areas and isolated thunderstorms. At the highest peaks of Troodos, it will occasionally snow or sleet. Locally, the effects may be prolonged or even intense. The winds will blow mainly southwest, moderate to strong, 4 to 5 beauforts, but on the coast strong to very strong, 5 to 6 beauforts. The sea will be turbulent and windy to wavy. The temperature will drop to 10 degrees inland, around 13 on the coast and to 1 degree in the higher mountains, where frost is expected to form.

On Tuesday, the weather will initially be mostly cloudy with rain in several areas and isolated thunderstorms. At the highest peaks of Troodos, it will occasionally snow or sleet. The weather is expected to improve significantly after noon.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the weather will be mostly cloudy and local rains and isolated thunderstorms are expected.

The temperature on Monday and Tuesday is not expected to change significantly, remaining close to the average climatic values, while on Thursday a small drop is expected. The height of the snow in Troodos Square, at the time of issuance of the bulletin, was 10 cm.
