What does the Minister say? Vaccine Health in Cyprus-How much will the vaccines that are said to be close to the target cost?

The coronavirus vaccine in Cyprus will be provided free of charge to the whole world, as the Minister of Health Konstantinos Ioannou stated to Offsite.

Specifically, in a communication we had with the Minister regarding the cost of vaccines, he stated that: “The vaccines will be free for the whole world and their supply to Cyprus will be done through the joint supply for the EU. Exactly the same applies to the other vaccines covered in the vaccine regimen. However, it is early, the vaccine is delayed even until a population is found and vaccinated, the effort should be focused on following the measures and adopting the advice for example the frequent washing, the mask, the distances etc. This is what we must emphasize, because the impression is that we are done with the virus. We will finish when the vaccine comes ".

At the same time, as the Minister clarified a few days ago and in the main news bulletin of RIK, there is no decision that the vaccine will be mandatory. Priority will be given to vulnerable groups and health professionals. According to the joint agreement reached with the EU, Cyprus is entitled to 1,2 million vaccines, a sufficient amount that can cover the entire population, including the Turkish Cypriots.

How much will the vaccine cost?

According to the Financial Times, the US-backed company Moderna to find the vaccine will sell its vaccines at a price of $ 25-30 per dose. As this vaccine will be provided in two doses, this means that the price will be $ 50-60 for each person.

In contrast, the price of other vaccines such as those of Pfizer (PFE) - BioNTech and AstraZeneca (Oxford vaccine) is lower. According to the Financial Times, the price of the Pfizer vaccine (PFE) has so far been set for developed economies at $ 20 for each installment and $ 40 for both. While even lower is the cost of AstraZeneca (AZN) in European countries as it ranges at 3-4 dollars per dose.

However, so far Moderna, which has the most expensive price, has refrained from commenting on the Financial Times article, as it announced that they are discussing with a number of governments about the possible delivery of the vaccine and these discussions are private and that is why they do not comment on them.

According to a spokesman for the US Department of Health, each company is negotiating the terms of its own agreement and vaccine prices have not yet been decided.

While some pharmaceutical companies, such as AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), have stated that they will sell the vaccines at their own expense, Moderna is not the only one seeking to make a profit.

Pfizer CEO Albert Burla told Barron's that it makes no sense to tell companies not to make a profit from drugs and vaccines for Covid-19 .

However, drug market analysts note that the $ 2 billion deal between Pfizer and BioNTech to cover 50 million patients, which depends on the final approval of the product, is likely to put pressure on other vaccine manufacturers. coronavirus to set similar price levels.
