Kouris, the largest dam in Cyprus, overflowed overnight, for the third time since its construction in 1988.

The Kouris Dam, with a capacity of 115 million cubic meters of water, had overflowed for the first time on March 4, 2004, and it took eight years for it to overflow again, on April 6, 2012.

After another eight years, the Kouris dam overflowed during the night and many people rushed to watch the spectacle, while the area is expected to be a pole of attraction for many of our fellow citizens.

It is noted that in the corresponding period last year, the filling of the dam was 17,4%, with the stored amount reaching only 20 million cubic meters of water, however the heavy rains that followed, significantly strengthened the inflow of water.

The dam was visited at midnight by the Mayor of Ypsonas, Pantelis Georgiou, who through a live connection on Facebook, from the page of Kairophiles of Cyprus, expressed his joy for the overflow of the dam.

He also said that all the communities in the Kouris valley have been informed to take precautionary measures, while on the part of the Municipality, he said that the roads have been cleared of landslides, "so that everyone can visit the region".

He noted that in the coming days, an event is expected to take place at the site, in consultation with the Ministry of Agriculture.

It is reminded that, with yesterday's announcement, the Department of Water Development informs that for the safe movement of pedestrians, the road above the dam should remain free from vehicles, trolleys, etc.

It also instructs street vendors to settle in off-road areas and visitors to follow the instructions of the Police and show respect to the environment, keeping the surrounding areas clean.
