A case of causing a fire in the countryside, with a 54-year-old man suspected of lighting the fire, is being investigated by the Police in the province of Nicosia.
After information was received around 4.00 last Sunday afternoon and reported that a man was setting fire to a field in the area of Paleometocho, while he also expressed threats against citizens who called him to stop, members of the Police rushed to the area for examination. At the scene of the fire, they located the 54-year-old, who according to citizens' testimonies, lit the fire, while threatening and insulting two other people who remarked on its lighting.
The 54-year-old, who was carrying a shotgun and a number of cartridges, was called and presented at the local Kokkinotrimithia Police Station, where during interrogation he denied any involvement. He was charged in writing with lighting the fire, as well as the offenses of threatening and public insult that he allegedly committed.
The shotgun, along with the cartridges held by the 54-year-old, were seized for examination, which revealed that he was the registered owner of the weapon. It was also found that the 54-year-old is a holder of a hunting license, while hunting is allowed in the area where the fire broke out.
The Kokkinotrimithia Police Station is investigating.
The fire, which burned around a tenth of land with dry vegetation, was extinguished by members of the Fire Department.
